Man threatens to run amok with kitchen knives

MIRI: A man who is believed to be mentally unsound caused a scare in the city’s commercial centre Friday when he threatened to run amok with two kitchen knives in hand.

Luckily, two policemen, who were alerted to the incident at the Boulevard Commercial Centre, managed to arrest him after a struggle.

The two officers also seized the two weapons wielded by the man, one of which was a foot-long knife.

No one was injured in the incident.

Miri OCPD Asst Comm Khoo Leng Huat said the two policemen responded to an emergency call from the public and arrived at a public bus-stop to see a man in his 60s brandishing a knife in each hand.

“The two officers reacted when the man challenged them.

“They managed to wrestle him to the ground before he could cause any harm.

“The man is believed to be in his 60s.

“He could not speak properly and he did not have any personal documents on him,” he said.

ACP Khoo said police sent the man to Miri Hospital after arresting him.

Initial reports from the hospital’s psychiatric unit are that the man may be suffering from mental problems, he added.
