MIRI: A man arrested on suspicion of raping an underage girl was ordered by a magistrate’s court here to be remanded for five days to facilitate police investigation.

Magistrate Kasyfurrahman Abang Ahmad issued the order after allowing a remand application maded by investigating officer Inspector Muhammad Kamel Sulaiman @ Ibrahim.

In his application, Kamel said a housewife made a police report at the central police station here on March 5.

The housewife, 29, claimed that around 4.30pm on Feb 14, her daughter had gone out of the house without her knowledge and consent, believed to be with her boyfriend.

She suspected her daughter of having sex with the boy.

Acting on information received, the police arrested a young man at a plantation workers’ quarters in Lambir around 11.10pm on March 19.

Further in his application, Kamel said that a seven-day remand under Section 117 of the Penal Code was needed on the suspect, 22, from Batu 14, Sungai Teniku, Jalan Miri-Bintulu, to enable police to complete their investigation under of Section 376 of the Penal Code.

The police also needed more time to trace the case exhibits and releasing the suspect early might jeopardise their investigation.
