Man linked to Jemaah Islamiyah Detained in Brunei

Bandar Seri Begawan: The Internal Security Department (ISD) has detained a foreign national residing in the country under Section 3(1)(a) of the Internal Security Act on February 21 2014, for his involvement in terrorism-related activities.

Investigation conducted by the ISD revealed that Awaluddin, who has gone by several aliases such as Ustaz Yasin, Abu Yasar, Dani and Daniardanalin, has admitted to be a member of Indonesia-based Islamic fighter group Jemaah Islamiyah (JI). He has undergone training in Afghanistan in the early 1990s and was detained in Indonesia for his suspected involvement in a bombing in Medan, Indonesia on the eve of Christmas year 2000. The attack was part of coordinated campaign targeting Christian churches launched by members of JI, an Al-Qaeda affiliate operating in the Muslim majority country.

Investigation revealed that Daniel @ Awaluddin Sitorus has been in contact with the leader of Kumpulan Mujahidin Indonesia (KMI) and in early 2013, he was involved in facilitating the entry of a suspicious individual into the country.

The ISD assessed Daniel @ Awaluddin Sitorus activities as having the potential for a greater plan for future entry and subsequently settle in the Sultanate for members or former recruits of the militant group that would thus lead to the creation of a safe haven within Brunei Darussalam, as well as a financial-generating hub for fighter groups outside of the country.

A press statement issued from the ISD said, the governments decision to detain Daniel @ Awaluddin Sitorus is deemed to be a preventive measure and that the Government of His Majesty the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Muizzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and the Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam does not tolerate any elements related to terrorism in the country.

At the same time, the detention of Daniel @ Awaluddin Sitorus is also testament to the high level of commitment and cooperation between the relevant intelligence and enforcement agencies within the country, as well as foreign agencies in combating activities that could jeopardize the security and maintenance of public order in the country.

In relation to this, the ISD took the opportunity to remind the public to be cautious of tactics and false propaganda of those who claim to be supporting the implementation of the Syariah Penal Code but later on deflecting it towards their own interest such as extremism and terrorism.

Meanwhile, ISD encouraged the public to always be on alert and prepared to act as the eyes and ears of the government by providing any information that is deemed as potentially harmful to the security and harmony of the nation, specifically on any individual or group that may be involved with militant and terrorist activities, by calling ISD hotline 133 or visiting any ISD branch in the country.

Continuous efforts and measures have been taken by the Government of His Majesty the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Muizzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and the Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam to ensure that the country remains free from any negative elements including terrorist threats that could jeopardize the peace, harmony and well-being of the nation.

Jemaah Islamiyah is an Islamic militant group dedicated to the establishment of Islamic caliphate while integrating extreme reinterpretation of Al-Quran, hadith (tradition of Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi Wassalam) and Syariah Law as the core foundation of the groups beliefs. The history of this group went back as far as the 1940s. One of the deadliest attacks attributed to JI was the 2002 Bali bombings, in which two hundred and two people were killed in a double suicide bomb attacks.
