Malaysia to import sugar
IPOH: The Government will import sugar to overcome a shortage of the essential item during the coming festivals.
Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Mohd Shafie Apdal announced this after checking supply of sugar at two hypermarkets here.
He said the Government would resort to importing sugar so that there would be sufficient supply for Deepavali and Hari Raya.
He reassured consumers that the retail price of coarse sugar in the peninsular would remain at RM1.45 a kg and RM1.55 per kg for fine sugar.
The respective items would cost 10sen more in Sabah and Sarawak.
