Lee: Get to the root cause of bullying

GEORGE TOWN: The Education Ministry should set up a taskforce or a high-level committee to evaluate bullying cases in schools.

Social activist Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said the move was necessary due to an increase in bullying cases involving both boys and girls.

“It is a serious matter which warrants the ministry to conduct a thorough study on the cause.

“Could it be due to a lack of discipline? Or external influences such as children mimicking actions seen on television?” Lee asked during the closing ceremony for the UPSR motivation camp by Eco World Foundation at a hotel yesterday.

Lee described bullying as a “form of violence” and should not be allowed to take place in schools.

“Students are taught about noble values in schools but to what extent is it being put into practice?” he asked.

On July 15, the father of a Form One student lodged a police report against five teenagers for allegedly beating up his 13-year-old son at a school in Miri.

The father claimed that the five teenagers also included students of the school.

On the motivation camp, Lee said a total of 94 pupils from 21 schools took part in the three-day two-night programme.

It is part of Eco World’s Student Aid Programme, held nationwide several times a year, to help boost the confidence of Year Six pupils, sitting for their first public examination.

Lee, who is also the foundation chairman, added that RM48,000 was spent on the programme to provide skills and motivate the pupils to do well.
