Italian investors show interest in Miri biodiesel industry

MIRI: Several Italian investors are keen on exploring the biodiesel industry potential in northern Sarawak.

Tourism attractions such as the Mulu National Park world heritage site and the music festivals here are also potential areas of interest for the Italians.

Italy Ambassador to Malaysia Cristiano Maggipinto visited Miri with his trade commissioner Samuele Porsia and trade analyst Shakira Matridi yesterday.

They visited Miri mayor Adam Yii at the city council where he briefed them on Miri and northern Sarawak.

Yii later told reporters that the Italian delegation was here for their first visit to northern Sarawak.

“They are keen to explore the potential of our biodiesel industry to see if we can have joint ventures with Italian investors.

“The Italians are interested in green technology and biodiesel is one sector Sarawak is venturing into so there is potential for collaborations.

“The Italian delegation is also very eager to visit Mulu and help promote it to the rest of Italy,” he said.

He added that the ambassador was in Miri to attend the jazz festival.

“He said he enjoyed his visit to Miri and he sees much potential for future tourism and economic ventures,” said Yii.

During the visit, the city council presented the Italian delegates with books that showed the people and the colourful places of interest in this northern Sarawak hub.
