PENANG: The Gates of Hell opened yesterday, freeing the spirits of the underworld for one month.
And ushering in the ghost month, which falls on the seventh month of the lunar calendar, makeshift sheds for Phor Thor (Hungry Ghost festival) have sprouted in various parts of the island.
It is also a time when the various Phor Thor committees try to outdo each other in raising money for charity.
Penang Teong Guan Association chairman Lim Yam Koi said 216 committees had registered with the association this year.
We expect to raise RM600,000 through this festival for Convent Datuk Keramat’s school building fund this year, he added.
Komtar Phor Thor committee chairman Boo Cheok Kiang said RM40,000 had been spent for its three-day celebration, including a ko tai (modern stage show) for three nights.
Paper effigy maker Loh Soo Ban said he had received more than 20 orders to make Tai Su Yah (King of Hades) effigies.
Phor Thor falls on the seventh lunar month (July 25 to Aug 23) this year.
However, there’s a double seventh lunar month this year, the second from Aug 24 to Sept 21.

Does that mean, I have to stay home for 2 months and not to have my night out during weekends!!! Oh no!!! I can’t imagine this… I already have a few parties line up starting from this weekend until end of August!!! What laaah… bad timing!!! :roll:
