KUCHING: The chief minister’s suggestion of observing July 22 as the day Sarawak gained independence from the British colonialists should be supported by Sarawakians.
Several people interviewed yesterday expressed delight that Sarawakians, especially the younger generation, should be reminded of the state’s historical event which took place almost 53 years ago.
Assistant Minister of Public Health Datuk Dr Jerip Susil opined that Sarawak has a unique history of its own and the suggestion by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem is truly a good proposal for the state.
“Many Sarawakians, especially the younger generation, might not be aware of how significant the date is for Sarawakians. We have the right to observe it as a public holiday here in Sarawak,” he added.
It was during a Chinese New Year dinner held in Miri on Friday (Feb 12) that Adenan announced that the state wants to observe the date as an important date for Sarawak.
Armed Forces Veterans Association Sarawak chairman Roland Demong commented that Adenan’s move was a right one as he knows what the people of Sarawak wants.
“There is nothing wrong with suggesting the date July 22 as a public holiday here in the state. Adenan is like any other Sarawakian who wants the date to be observed,” he said.
Veterans deputy Jossem Daweg on the other hand commented that by wanting to observe the date, it does not mean that Sarawakians want to differentiate themselves or offend their compatriots in Peninsular Malaysia. It is just that Sarawak has a unique history of its own and other Malaysians should acknowledge the heritage and legacy.
Meanwhile, Sarawak for Sarawakians (S4S) activist Peter John Jaban said he was in full support of what the chief minister mooted.
“Let’s hope it becomes a reality. I hope it is not mere talk and nothing more,” he commented.
On Sept July 22, 1963 Sarawak received independence from the British colonialists before Sarawak formed the country of Malaysia with Sabah, Singapore and Malaya the same year.
