Global alert: SARS-like virus spread across Middle East

Between 2002 to 2003, the outbreak of SARS in Hong Kong, a viral respiratory disease in humans that is caused by the SARS coronavirus, nearly led to a global pandemic, with 8,096 cases and 774 deaths worldwide. Within weeks, SARS spread from Hong Kong to infect individuals in 37 countries.

Now a new virus from the same family as SARS has sparked global alert after two deaths in Saudi Arabia, and several infected in Qatar, the World Health Organization said. The outbreak is believed to originate in Saudi Arabia, and had spread to neighboring Qatar.

The new virus is a coronavirus and shares some of the symptoms of SARS, or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome. Among the symptoms in the confirmed cases are fever, coughing and breathing difficulties. Of the six confirmed cases reported to WHO, four cases, including the two deaths, are from Saudi Arabia and two cases are from Qatar.

Coronaviruses are typically spread like other respiratory infections, such as flu, travelling in airborne droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The WHO said investigations were being conducted into the likely source of the infection, the method of exposure, and the possibility of human-to-human transmission of the virus. “Close contacts of the recently confirmed cases are being identified and followed-up,” it said.

The U.N. health organization urged all its member states to continue surveillance for the infections. “Until more information is available, it is prudent to consider that the virus is likely more widely distributed than just the two countries which have identified cases,” it said.

As with SARS, the infections could possibly be cured at its earliest stage. Britain’s Health Protection Agency first detected the new virus in September, when a Qatari man seek medical treatment in the U.K. and Germany, who has now been treated and discharged. The SARS-like virus currently has no formal name, though scientists at the British laboratories where it was identified have been calling it London1_novel CoV 2012.
