IPOH: A college student staged her own kidnapping to extort money from her family to settle her boyfriends debts.
State CID chief Senior Asst Comm (II) Datuk A. Paramasivam said that with the help of a friend, the 19-year-old girl plotted the fake abduction with her boyfriend and demanded an RM80,000 ransom.
She was actually hiding out at two hotels in Kuala Lumpur, he told reporters yesterday.
SAC (II) Paramasivam said the girls college roommate discovered her missing on Aug 2.
She did not show up for a lunch appointment with the roommate and could not be found in her room, he said.
Her family who are from Sitiawan, where they run a restaurant later received two phone calls demanding RM80,000 for the girls release.
However, for unknown reasons, it was called off and the girl was released at Sekinchan in Sabak Bernam (Selangor) at 5.30am on Aug 5 before the money was paid, he said.
On Wednesday, police arrested the girls 27-year-old boyfriend, a debt collector with a loans company, and their friend, a tow truck driver aged 26.
We also recovered the girls mobile phone from the boyfriend and her necklace from the other suspect.
She had earlier claimed in her statement to the police that the two items were taken by the kidnappers, SAC (II) Paramasivam said.
The two men would be remanded until Aug 15 to facilitate investigations.
We will refer the matter to the Public Prosecutors office for instructions, he said.
