MIRI: Some 40 residents of Kampung Api-api had an eventful weekend at the mobile clinic and recycling day organised by Tzu Chi Foundation, Miri branch.
They had the opportunity to undergo health screening that included body mass index (BMI), blood pressure and glucose tests provided at the three-hour programme from 8 to 11am at their community hall.
Aside from these, volunteers took the opportunity to brief the villagers on health issues.
Meanwhile, about 20 young boys and girls participated in the recycling activity by bringing recyclable items like plastic bottles and papers from their homes and surroundings for sorting and processing.
Despite merely months since we started promoting the recycling activity here, the overwhelmingly positive response from the villagers, especially the youngsters, has been an encouragement for us to continue our effort, Tzu Chi publicity and event officer Dennis Yee told The Borneo Post.
Thus, he added, from next year onwards, Tzu Chi planned to hold a recycling day at Kampung Api-api on the morning of every fourth Sunday of every month.
Through the programme, we hope to create awareness of a clean and green environment in this village, particularly among the young children and youth, as we believe that starting young can benefit our younger generation, he said.
Apart from the health screening and recycling programme, the villagers, young and old, took turns to have a free hair cut provided by the Tzu Chi volunteers.
