MIRI: Police on Saturday evening arrested a 23-year-old Indonesian man in connection with the alleged rape of a 14-year-old girl.
Miri police chief ACP Gan Tian Kee, when contacted yesterday, said the arrest was made around 5pm.
The suspect was nabbed in his house in Kampung RPR Jalan Pujut-Lutong here, said Gan.
The case is being investigated under Section 376 of the Penal Code for rape.
According to sources, the girls father had earlier gone to the suspects house to take his daughter home, as he suspected she was with the suspect in the house.
However, he failed to persuade his daughter to go home, prompting him to call the police for assistance.
In response, a mobile police vehicle (MPV) rushed to the suspects house.
The suspect, upon seeing the MPV pull over at his house, then surrendered the girl to her father.
During preliminary investigation, the girl confessed that she had sex with the man several times.
Acting on the information, a team of police arrested the suspect and brought him to Miri Central Police Station.
Meanwhile, the girl has been sent to Miri Hospital for a medical check-up.
Sources added that the girl had befriended the suspect via Wechat the past five days prior to the arrest.
The suspect is a widower and is now under police custody.
