MIRI: Food delivery rider Timothy Liew Jian Yui never expected his decision to don a ‘panda’ motorcycle helmet on his first day on the job would generate so much attention on social media.
The 27-year-old musician may have only just started working for foodpanda, but a photo of him in his one-of-a-kind helmet has already garnered more than 10,000 shares since it was uploaded on Facebook by user Rahman Ahamad on Wednesday.
The photo was snapped at a traffic light intersection near Bintang Plaza, and uploaded with the caption ‘Bena2 PANDA tk’ (This really is a PANDA).
Speaking to The Borneo Post yesterday, Liew said he never expected a photo of him in his ‘panda’ helmet would become a talking point on social media.

“It (Wednesday) was my first day working as a food delivery rider. I had noticed quite a few people taking photos of me especially when I stopped at traffic light junctions.
“I don’t know the person whose photo of me went viral, but I remember turning to face him when he was taking it. I’m glad that I can make people smile just by them looking at me in my panda helmet,” he said.
According to Liew, he and his band mates used to play at local bars but with all night entertainment spots yet to reopen since the Movement Control Order was implemented on March 18, he decided to sign up as a foodpanda runner.
On his unique helmet, he said he has always had an affinity for pandas, adding it may have subconsciously made him choose to sign up for foodpanda over other food delivery companies.
He said after successfully signing up, he went in search of a panda ‘head’ and fitted it onto his motorcycle helmet.
“I thought it was a good touch as it allows me to really represent the company. That, plus my body shape is similar to that of a panda bear,” he said, bursting into laughter.
