Food aid airlifted to longhouse fire victims in northern Sarawak

MIRI: Emergency food aid has been airlifted to the Long Seridan longhouse, located in the deep interior of northern Sarawak, where about 100 people lost their home and all their belongings in a fire on Sunday evening.

The fire swept a longhouse block at about 5.30pm and razed it to the ground.

On Monday, the Miri Fire and Rescue Department deployed its personnel and delivered food supplies as well as other necessities to the site via helicopter, which is about 45 minutes by air from Miri Airport.

Miri fire chief Supt Law Poh Kiong said that its air unit had deployed a helicopter to the scene.

“We will probe the cause of the fire and also render aid to the victims,” he said.

Long Seridan is located at least 10 hours by timber track from Miri.

This is the second major fire there this month.

On April 11, the Long Seridan government clinic, one of the most remote in the country, was also razed by fire.
