Flood alert for 13 districts

MIRI: Thirteen districts in Sarawak are on high alert for floods.

The Sarawak Disaster Relief Committee issued the warning at 10.30am yesterday but there was already havoc caused by the floods.

In Miri, numerous housing areas were hit by floods and Fire and Rescue Department personnel evacuated hundreds of pupils from SJK© Tukau as water levels rose.

Department chief Supt Law Poh Kiong said his men helped bring pupils to safety.

“The pupils were told by the school authorities to get out of their classes as floodwaters entered the buildings,” he said, adding that the firemen then carried the pupils to the main road where their parents were waiting.

Floods were also being reported throughout many rural districts in the state as it had been raining non-stop the past 24 hours.

The disaster relief committee warned that the torrential rain was expected to continue.

The districts placed on yellow-level warnings are Kuching, Samarahan, Serian, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah, Bintulu, Miri, Song, Kapit and Belaga.

Betong, Sri Aman, Sarikei, Song, Kapit and Belaga are rural districts while the rest are urban locations.

As at noon yesterday, about 700 people have been evacuated and placed in flood relief centres.
