MIRI: Police arrested five individuals including a couple suspected of being involved in several car theft cases during a raid here.
The first arrest was made at around 4.00pm after a police team from D4 unit of the state police contingent and Miri police headquarters raided a house in Kampung Pujut Tanjung Batu, Padang Kerbau and detained the couple and two men.
Miri Police cheif, ACP Junaidi Bujang said following the arrest of the suspects aged between 33 and 53 years, police also seized three vehicles, a Toyota Vios, Nissan Sentra and Toyota Hilux as well as a Honda EX5 motorcycle.
“All vehicles were found using fake registration numbers. We also found that the chassis numbers of the Toyota Vios and Nissan Sentra are registered in this country. We believed they were stolen from neighbouring countries,” he said during a press conference here yesterday.
He said police also found 10 shotgun cartridges and a gun, believed to be a shotgun, which had been dismantled and hidden behind the driver seat of the Toyota Hilux.
“Police also seized a military camouflage shirt, two laptops, a tablet computer and a bunch of vehicle keys,” he added.
Junaidi said initial investigation revealed the house owner had previous criminal record while one of the accomplices had been imprisoned for committing an offence under Section 379 of the Penal Code.
Meanwhile, in the second raid in Eastwood Valley Industrial Park, he said police had arrested a 44-year-old man.
“Besides the arrest, police also seized a Proton Waja which was reported missing in this city in 2014,” he said, adding all suspects were remanded for three days to facilitate investigation.
