MIRI: Local fishermen and traders strive to maintain the cleanliness of Luak Fishermen’s Market near here by conducting ‘gotong-royong’ (work party) regularly.

According to Kampung Luak-Lusut Youth Action committee chairman Julaihi Trang, the work party also engages the villagers of Kampung Luak, Kampung Lusut and the nearby Kampung Riam.

“We are happy to see that there are many youths from these villages who are helping the fishermen and traders to keep the wet market, its stalls and surrounding compound clean and tidy.

“I believe that such activity also strengthens the spirit of cooperation in them,” he said after a ‘gotong-royong’ at the market yesterday where Miri Area Fishermen Association general manager Malik Bol was also present.

On the youth action committee, Julaihi said it would continue to work together with the village folk and local non-governmental organisations (NGOs) – including the local fishermen association – in ensuring the participation of youths in community activities here.

He added that the ‘gotong-royong’ would also cover areas beyond the fish market.

“What is important is for us to foster the spirit of cooperation among the villagers, especially the youths, of Kampung Luak and Kampung Lusut, as well as the neighbouring Kampung Riam, so that customers would continue to come to the market,” he said.

The Luak Fishermen’s Market is popular among Mirians who want to buy fish fresh off the fishermen’s boats. It is especially crowded during weekends.
