Fishermen cry for help

MIRI: Fishermen at Kampung Luak and Lusut are crying out loud over their boathouse which was partially destroyed by falling trees during strong winds and waves two weeks ago due to soil erosion.

Rakan Nelayan Kampung Luak and Lusut chairman Wahid Mampi Abdullah said the incident would not have happened if they had received funding to construct wave breakers at the shore despite the numerous meetings they had with the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) regarding the matter.

The problem of erosion has always been there, thus we need more reinforcement to stop the strong waves from eroding the shore near the boathouse, he said yesterday.

Apart from the wave breaker, he said the concrete boat ramp also had to be repaired.

The erosion had affected the ramp, so fishermen cannot pull their boats out to the sea, he said.

He said it had been a week that fishermen could not go to the sea because of the eroded ramp.

Thus, I am representing the other fishermen to ask for immediate action to assist us, especially to relocate the mooring bay further inland to avoid the strong waves, he said.
