MIRI: Swift action by the Fire and Rescue Department personnel saved four occupants of a rented residence on the first floor of a building at Jalan Sylvia here yesterday afternoon.
According to the department’s spokesperson, a report on the fire was received around 2.12pm and five fire fighters from Miri Central station led by senior Fire officer II Abang Muhd Fhazil were dispatched to the scene immediately.
“Fire fighters found the living room of a rental residence on the first floor about 25 per cent destroyed and rescued an occupant sleeping in one room and three others from another room. Two men and two women were rescued,” said the spokesperson in a statement yesterday.
The fire at the walls and ceiling of the living room was fully extinguished.
In another incident yesterday afternoon, a house in Taman Yakin here was almost destroyed when a van parked in front of the house caught fire.
Zone 6 Miri Fire and Rescue Department chief Supt Law Poh Kiong said an emergency call was received about 2.34pm.
“Seven firefighters from Lopeng station led by Senior Fire Officer II Ellai Bidang were deployed to the scene. Upon arrival, they found that a van in the porch of the house was on fire,” he said in a media statement yesterday.
Law said the van was about 80 per cent burnt while the car porch measuring 25 by 10 square feet was about 30 per cent burnt.
“Fire fighters fully extinguished the fire which burnt the ceiling of the house and two air conditioning compressors,” he stated.
Law added that the fire was brought under control around 2.55pm and the operation ended at 3.10pm.
