MIRI: A 12-door longhouse in Long Anyat Patah in Baram was destroyed by fire on Sunday, bringing to two the number of longhouse fires in Baram three days into the New Year.
The other incident happened on New Year’s Day in Long Teru. Ten doors of the 52-door Rumah Kajan Sigeh were razed to the ground, leaving 10 families homeless.
The settlement in Long Anyat Patah comprised four longhouses. Only one longhouse was affected by the 2pm fire, and longhouse chieftain Johnny Bilong’s house was in that particular row.
PKR Baram secretary Dennis Along said it was unfortunate that two longhouse fires happened in Baram within the first three days of the New Year.
“We were informed about the incident yesterday. We are now making arrangements to collect donations from our members and the public for the victims,” he said when contacted yesterday.
He said PKR Baram chairman Roland Engan, who is in Kuala Lumpur, had been alerted.
“We will wait for him (Roland) before sending our men to Long Anyat Patah in the next few days.”
Those who wish to donate to the fire victims can call Dennis at 012-8707475.
