Fire and Rescue Dept assists longhouse resident reapply for personal documents

MIRI: Miri Fire and Rescue Department personnel are going beyond their call of duty to help longhouse fire victims in Long Seridan, in interior Sarawak.

The personnel will assist natives to reapply for their birth certificates and identity cards that were destroyed in a fire on Sunday evening.

Yesterday morning, a Fire and Rescue Department helicopter from Miri flew to the incident site, carrying a team to probe the cause of the fire and provide assistance to the victims, said Miri Fire and Rescue Department chief Supt Law Poh Kiong.

“We are airlifting various types of aid, including food supply, this morning.

“We are also sending clothes and blankets and other personal items donated by the Miri Red Cresent.

“A mobile counter will be set up at the site to assist victims to make official reports on their losses, especially vital personal documents.

From Miri, it takes about 10 hours to reach Long Seridan by land and 45 minutes by helicopter.

The incident was the second major fire in Long Seridan this month.

On April 11, fire razed Long Seridan government clinic, one of the country’s most remote clinics.
