MARUDI: A new ferry service across Batang Tinjar has brought great relief to Kampung Benawa folk.
For years the village has been the only one in central Baram that could not be reached by car.
Villagers had to travel by river from Miri or Marudi.
Villager and businessman Mohammad Manshor, 49, brought the idea of a ferry service to Assistant Minister of Local Government and Housing Datu Dr Penguang Manggil, who is Marudi assemblyman.
“For a car to drive from Miri to Kampung Benawa, you just spend one hour and half only, and also from Marudi. The ferry service charge for each vehicle per crossing is RM30, and meaning to say you spend RM60 for to and fro,” Mohammad said.
“The price is no problem as we want to reach our home village.”
He said villagers were thankful to the ferry owner for offering the service to their village and Penguang for his willingness to assist his constituents.
Mohammad called on fellow villagers working in Miri or elsewhere to return home to visit their elders as they could now drive there.
He added his four-wheel drive was the first vehicle to reach Kampung Benawa.
