MIRI: Investigations into the Long Aton longhouse fire showed that the settlement was lacking fire extinguishers.
Miri Fire and Rescue Department chief Supt Law Poh Kiong said fire inspectors found that only two out of 10 fire extinguishers at the longhouse were in working condition.
“The rest were faulty.
“Fire extinguishers must be in proper working order at all times.
“This is an issue we must look into,” he said.
On Aug 16, fire razed the 200m Long Aton longhouse in Baram where 29 families were residing.
About 200 residents lost all their belongings.
The victims are now staying at makeshift huts while waiting for assistance to rebuild their homes.
The welfare authorities have despatched food aid and other necessities to Long Aton, located at least six hours’ drive from Miri.
