MIRI: Miri Anglers Club (MAC) has extended the closing date of registration for its Rapala Jigging Competition 2016 from July 10 to July 17.
The competition is scheduled to take place at Kampung Kuala Sibuti on July 24, starting 7am.
It is organised by MAC in collaboration with the Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC), Marine Fisheries Department, Village Development and Safety Committee (JKKK) Kpg Kuala Sibuti, Kuala Sibuti Jiran Wanita and Neighbourhood Committee.
A spokesman for the event said the extension of the closing date is to encourage more entries for the contest.
“The competition is open to everyone aged 18 years old and above and there are two registration fees. The first is RM250, which include the boat fee, while the other one is RM100 excluding boat fee,” he said, referring to anglers using their own vessel.
Touching on the event, he said once the competition is flagged off at 7am on that day, all participants must sail off simultaneously and they are free to fish within the area of Batu Tar and Batu Besar.
“Participants are allowed to use long boats and speed boats but each participating vessel must be equipped with life jackets,” he disclosed.
He added that only fish weighing not less than 1 kg and is hooked up using jigs of Rapala or Storm brands can be entered for the competition and participants can submit as many ‘qualified fish’ as they want.
Participants are also not allowed to use any other fishing bait except for jigs on board the competing vessels and all vessels will be inspected before departing from the jetty.
“It is the responsibility of the participants to take all the necessary precautions to preserve the freshness of the fish. Fish found to be unreasonably stale will be disqualified,” he said.
All anglers must present their catch for judging at the jetty at 3pm on that day.
The champion will walk away with RM2,000 while the second and third place winners will receive RM1,000 and RM600. The fourth placed angler will take home RM400 and fifth place will receive RM200. All five winners will also receive Rapala/Storm fishing tackles each.
Names of the winners will be announced immediately after judging and presentation of prizes will be held on the spot. The winning fish will be kept by the organiser.
In case the weather does not permit, the tournament will be postponed to a later time and all participants will be notified accordingly. No refund will be allowed and the organiser reserves the right to fix the time and date for the subsequent tournament.
