Employer fined RM225,000 for housing 45 illegal immigrants

KUCHING: An employer was fined RM225,000 by the Sessions Court in Sibu for housing 45 illegal immigrants at a premises, said Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).

In a statement yesterday, SDMC said the accused was charged under Section 55E(1) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, which states that an occupier must not permit illegal immigrants to enter or remain at a premises.

“A total of 45 illegal immigrants had been arrested at a premises owned by the employer.

“The accused had pleaded guilty and was fined RM5,000 in default three months’ imprisonment for each illegal immigrant housed at the premises,” it said.

The statement however did not mention when the court meted out the fine.

Separately, SDMC said police issued 10 compound notices yesterday for failure to comply with the standard operating procedures (SOP).

The compounds were issued in Miri (5), Samarahan (3) and one each in Kuching and Padawan districts.

In addition, local authorities under the Local Government and Housing Ministry issued 107 oral and written warnings to premises under their respective jurisdictions, in connection with the SOP.
