MIRI: Twenty nomination forms have been snapped up from the Election Commission’s office for Pujut constituency in UTC Miri as of yesterday.

Returning officer (RO) for Pujut, Chee Kie Chang, said some of the forms were bought by representatives of political parties and the rest by the aspiring candidates themselves.

Former Pujut assemblyman Fong Pau Teck, who will be standing as an independent candidate in the May 7 election, got his nomination form yesterday.

Pujut is very likely to see at least a four-cornered fight between Fong, direct BN candidate Datuk Hii King Chiong, PAS’ Jofree Jaraiee, and probably Dr Ting Tiong Choon from the DAP.

Fong, who formed an alliance called Calon Independent Alliance (CIA) with several members of Sarawak for Sarawakians (S4S), said he and his team were ready for the polls.

“Under CIA, we want to fight for the rights of Sarawakians, among them is 100 per cent ownership of oil and gas for Sarawak.”

Asked about his chances of retaining Pujut, Fong replied it would not be fair to other contesting candidates if he said he was confident.

“I would not say I am confident of retaining the seat under an independent ticket. But I have done my best, and I leave it to the voters to decide.”

In the 10th state election in 2011, Fong won with a 3,849-vote majority, but it was under a DAP ticket. He garnered 9,120 votes while BN-SUPP’s Andy Chia Chu Fatt got 5,271 votes.

Fong, however, was sacked from the DAP in 2013, and he had since then declared himself an independent.
