Eighth suspect of Kayong’s murder detained

KUCHING: An eighth suspect has been arrested in connection with the murder of Miri PKR secretary Bill Kayong (pic).

Sarawak CID chief SAC Dev Kumar said the 28-year-old man was picked up at an entertainment centre in Piasau Utara, Miri, at about 10.30pm on Wednesday and produced in the Miri magistrate’s court yesterday afternoon to be remanded.

“The taskforce has reason to believe that this suspect could shed more light on the murder,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Following the latest arrest, SAC Dev Kumar said seven suspects were already in custody. Five men and a woman were detained on June 30 and July 1.

Another suspect arrested on July 2 was released when the application for remand was rejected by the Miri magistrate’s court.

SAC Dev Kumar, who heads the taskforce set up to probe the case, said police would apply for a second remand order for the suspects arrested earlier as investigations were not yet completed.

“A few more suspects are still at large. We are unable to reveal their identities at this juncture so as to not jeopardise the ongoing investigation. It is a matter of time before they are traced and arrested,” he said.

He added that state Commissioner of Police Datuk Mazlan Mansor, who was monitoring the investigations, had given his assurance that no stone would be left unturned.

The taskforce was working round-the-clock in Miri to complete investigations, SAC Dev Kumar said.

On Tuesday, police recovered a shotgun believed to have been used in Kayong’s killing after one of the suspects arrested earlier led investigators to his house at Jalan Hai Nam Lama in Miri and showed them where the weapon was hidden.
