BUKIT MERTAJAM: Six Vietnamese and two Malaysians have been arrested in connection with 18 robbery and rape cases in Seberang Prai over the past four months.
The suspects, aged between 20 and 25, were arrested at a road block in Seberang Jaya here.
Central Seberang Prai district OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Anil Shah Abdullah said a police party, led by Chief Insp Tan Tee Chua, stopped a van which was travelling from Kulim, Kedah, to Butterworth at about 1.24am on Saturday following a tip-off.
"Police recovered 13 cleavers, iron cutters and cellophane tape from the van. Initial investigations show that the group would travel around town after midnight looking for victims.
We believe the group is responsible for at least 18 cases of gang robbery and gang rape but the number could be higher, he told a press conference at the district police headquarters here Tuesday.
ACP Mohd Anil Shah said with the arrest of the suspects, police had solved five gang rape cases in the central Seberang Prai district.
He said the two local men arrested with the foreigners were responsible in providing transport and helping them to dispose of the loot.
“The Vietnamese raped their targeted victims, who were fellow countrymen in their 20s, working in the factories and staying in houses converted into hostels.”
It is learnt that the suspects would break into the hostels after midnight and put the cellophane tape over the victim’s mouth before raping her.
While they took turns to rape her, the victim’s roommates would be held at knife point so as not to raise any alarm.
ACP Anil Shah said the suspects were under remand and police expected to pick up more suspects to facilitate investigations.
The suspects will be handed over to our counterparts in neighbouring districts in Seberang Prai as we believe they have been involved in several cases there," he said.
Good work police!
