MIRI: A 66-year-old Dutch tourist was found dead in a river inside the Mulu National Park Deer Cave after a flash flood.
Miri Fire and Rescue Department chief Supt Law Poh Kiong said Peter Hans Hoverkamp’s (pic) body was found at 6.40am yesterday.
Roviezal Robin, 20, a Sarawakian tour guide, is still missing and the search is ongoing.
Hoverkamp and Robin were swept away when the flood hit Mulu cave’s river at about 6pm on Friday.
Eight other tourists who were inside the cave managed to escape.
Supt Law said the department was informed of the incident on Friday evening but only deployed a helicopter from Miri to the scene yesterday morning.
Mulu is about 200km inland from Miri.
A team of 16 firemen, led by Supt Law, was involved in the search operation. The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department STORM unit, a special search and rescue squad, was also involved in the task.
