KUCHING: The construction of the Digital Village main building at Sama Jaya High Tech Park has now reached 30 per cent completion.

According to Digital Village head Hazwan Razak, the property should be ready for unveiling by the middle of next year.

Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Bumiputera Sarawak (Tegas) has been given the mandate to undertake the project, in which it will also be working closely with Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) to ensure its timely delivery and success.

“The main building in Sama Jaya will be known as the ‘Rumah Penghulu’ (house of village headman). So far, the construction (progress) is on schedule,” he told reporters when met after the closing ceremony of the Borneo International Drone and Robotics Explore (Drobotex) 2019 in Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) last Sunday.

Adding on, Hazwan said although the Rumah Penghulu had yet to reach completion, all activities related to the nurturing of talents, supporting entrepreneurs and creating innovators for Sarawak are already running.

“Infrastructures such as the SMA-Tegas Digital Innovation Hub centres in Kuching, Miri and Bintulu are already operating. These hubs are also a part of the Digital Village.”

The Digital Innovation Hub provides access to co-working spaces and shared amenities, funding opportunities and facilitation, incubation and acceleration programmes, as well as an entrepreneur-friendly ecosystem.

“Among the initiatives under Digital Village is ‘Launch Sarawak’ (Action 39) – a programme meant to provide a transformative pathway to support innovation, intellectual property creation and spin-offs, as well as the ‘Scale-Up’ and Open Lab programmes,” said Assistant Minister of Urban Development and Resources Datu Len Talif Salleh, who is also Tegas chairman.

He also said the Sarawak government, through the SMA, would set up the ‘Digital Landing Pads’ (Action 40) overseas to promote Sarawak as a destination for high-technology innovation and entrepreneurship like the Silicon Valley in the US, or Shanghai, China.

“It is also to encourage both domestic and foreign investments.”

The RM27-million Digital Village main building project was awarded to Hock Seng Lee Bhd, and Tegas had been given 18 months to finish all the works.

Tegas chief operating officer Awangku Merali Pengiran Mohamed was also present at the closing ceremony of Drobotex 2019.
