KUCHING: Despite hectic preparations for the upcoming elections, the CID continues its crackdown on gambling activities in the state the past week.

State Crime Investigation Department (CID) chief, SAC Dev Kumar Sree Shunmugam in a statement yesterday said 40 people were arrested over a seven-day period from 18 to 24 April.

He said the police had conducted 14 raids in 9 districts.

He added that most of the raids were led by the districts’ CID chiefs and CID HQ also deployed teams on the ground and conducted 3 raids.

“27 people were arrested for illegal character lottery (illegal 4D) while 9 were arrested for cyber gambling in Miri. 4 people were arrested for gambling in a public place in Sibu.

“Cash totalling RM4,251 believed to be proceeds from the gambling activities was seized,” he said.

Dev Kumar added that police also seized various gambling paraphernalia and other exhibits such as mobile phones, portable printers, tablets, calculators and betting slips.

The ops against all forms of gambling activities will be ongoing even during this election period, he said.
