Department denies biometric screening at Sungai Tujuh CIQ

MIRI: The Immigration Department has brushed aside claims that biometric screening would be introduced at the Sungai Tujuh Customs Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) checkpoint.

Immigration deputy assistant director and Sungai Tujuh head of operations Karin Upak said the claims which had gone viral were untrue.

He said the present system, where drivers hand over passports to the counter with the passengers remaining in the vehicles, will continue to be used to speed up the process of entry and exit.

“Those viral (posts) on social media that people using vehicles will now have to come out one by one to have their fingerprints taken for the biometric system are not true. The process of just the driver handing over the passports to an immigration officer is still being used,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday.

The posts had claimed that visitors were unhappy with the introduction of the biometric system at Sungai Tujuh CIQ.
