MIRI: The Customs Department here recently raided a premises in Sungai Tujuh near here, and seized various brands of contraband cigarettes.
A woman, 23, was also arrested to assist in the investigations.
More than 29,000 sticks of cigarettes of various brands worth RM3,648.32 and excise duty amounting to RM21,693.29 were seized.
The contrabands were found hidden in the toilet and under the counter inside the premises.
The case is being investigated under Section 135 of Customs Act 1967, and if found guilty, the offender could be fined 10 times the value of the goods seized or a RM100,000-fine whichever is the higher, or a jail term not less than six months and not more than five years or both.
Sarawak Customs director Dato Sharifah Halimah Tuanku Taha called on the public to cooperate with them by giving information on any smuggling activities involving cigarettes, alcohol, fire crackers and drugs by calling their Customs Tollfree line 1-800-88-8855, their website under Public Complaints, http://aduan.customs.gov.my or call the Customs office nearest to them.
It also said that any information given would be kept in strict confidential and their identity would not be revealed.
