Consulate general comes up with award for Indonesian workers

KUCHING: With many Indonesians working in Sarawak now, especially in key industries that are critical to the state’s economy, it is time that the contributions of these workers are recognised appropriately.

Thus, the Indonesian Consulate General in Kuching has come up with a programme to recognise the best Indonesian workers in Sarawak through an award called the Indonesian Migrant Workers Award (IMWA).

The Indonesian Migrant Workers Award (IMWA) was officially launched in Aug last year by the Consul-General of Indonesia in a ceremony witnessed by the Governor.

“Through IMWA, we hope to motivate and inspire the workers to work properly and minimise the number of workers who run away/abscond; follow the correct procedure of employment; be loyal to their employers and compassionate to their colleagues. These are the key criteria used for evaluation by the judges,” said a statement from the Indonesian Consulate General here yesterday.

The statement also stressed that by participating in IMWA, the consulate general would be able to encourage the respective employers to provide more attention and appreciation to their Indonesian workers and follow the correct procedure in the recruitment and employment of these workers and to provide an environment conducive to working that can allow the workers to progressively develop into better workers.

For this year, the closing date of nomination for the IMWA was Jan 22. The IMWA committee received 65 nominations from Indonesian workers from 13 companies representing three sectors; namely oil palm industry, timber industry and construction and manufacturing.

The first round of selection process resulted in 20 nominees being eliminated, leaving 45 nominees to proceed to the next round of evaluation. Out of the 45 nominees, 22 passed the second round and proceeded to the final.

The IMWA evaluation committee members conducted field visits to the workplace of these 22 finalists in Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu, and Miri for an in-depth interview with them, their supervisors as well as co-workers.

The IMWA is made possible with contributions from the following companies (in alphabetical order): The gold sponsors are Rimbunan Hijau Group, Samling Group, Sarawak Oil Palm Berhad,

Shinyang Plywood Sdn Bhd, Ta Ann Plywood Sdn Bhd and WTK Group of Companies. The silver sponsors are KTS Mutual Sdn Bhd and Sime Darby Sdn Bhd while the bronze sponsors are Golden Agri Resources & Technology Sdn Bhd, Jim Logs Group of Companies and Tradewinds Plantation Sdn Bhd. Ordinary sponsors are Best Motors Corporation Sdn Bhd, Felda Global Ventures Plantations Sdn Bhd, Harwood Timber Sdn Bhd, Press Metal Bintulu Sdn Bhd, Tetangga Akrab Sdn Bhd and Woodman Kuala Baram Estate Sdn Bhd.

The IMWA Night will be held this April 3 at a leading hotel here during which all winners will be announced.
