Complaints about haze get Dr Chan hot under the collar
By Lucas Jalong Bato
MIRI: The state Disaster Relief Committee chairman Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam who apparently lost his cool over incessant public complaints about the worsening smoke haze here took a swipe at armchair critics who had done nothing to make the situation better.
We dont have to listen to every complaint because the government is doing its best to tackle the problem and here you have people who complain about a little inconvenience.
We have our men on the ground almost around the clock. Firemen, officers from the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB), soldiers from the 20th Battalion Royal Malay Regiment, General Operations Force personnel, Civil Defence Department (JPA3) personnel and regular policemen are on the frontline battling the fire, he said.
At least the public should appreciate the efforts of these men who have toiled for hours and hours under the hot sun trying to put out the fires which spread out of control from open fires started by some irresponsible people.
It was reported that a total of 169 personnel were involved in Ops Jerebu a day earlier in Tudan, Permyjaya, Senadin and even around the Asean Bridge at Kuala Baram.
He was responding to a call made by thesundaypost yesterday regarding a complaint posted on opposition leader Lim Kit Siangs blog. The complaint was made by a local Curtin University student.
Among other things, the student (went by the name of Kit) said Curtin students have not been able to sleep at night because of the smoke haze.
He said they have nowhere to complain about the matter, to which Chan said they can always contact him and even the media.
He was not particularly happy that this particular student had complained to the opposition.
We are doing our best under the circumstances. Open burning by some irresponsible persons is the root cause of the problem. Dont put the blame and the responsibility squarely on the government, said Dr Chan.
At the end of the telephone interview, he said that later in the evening he would visit Curtin and surrounding areas affected by the haze.
