Competition raises the bar for volunteer firefighters

MIRI: A fireighting competition organised by the Miri Fire and Rescue Department drew participation from over 500 people from various organisations and communities.

Mulu assemblyman Datuk Gerawat Gala who was present praised the event as a competitive platform for firefighters and volunteers to assess their readiness and competency in facing emergencies.

“Those participating have an important responsibility of being first responders in the event of an emergency to help save lives and also property,” he said.

Gerawat also urged participants to transfer the knowledge gained from the competition to their peers.

Miri Fire and Rescue Department chief Supt Law Poh Khiong said that the number of people in the Emergency Response Team and volunteer firefighters had increased.

“We received participation from employees sent by their companies, volunteer firefighters from various communities and even members of the press.”

Miri Crude Oil Terminal (MCOT) Petronas clinched the title of best overall champions with wins in categories such as the team 400ft dry pump operation, 100ft hose laying operation (team, women and men) and ABC dry chemical fire extinguisher operation (women and men) as well as stair climbing and marching.

MCOT fire chief commander Mohammad Jaffar Bujang said his team conducted training sessions specifically for this competition.

“We faced strong competition from Miri Port and Malaysia Airlines,” he said.

Also present at the event were Miri Resident Sherrina Hussaini and Miri mayor Adam Yii.
