CM: We will be politically independent

MIRI: Sarawak is going “politically independent” to avoid making past mistakes, said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Openg.

He said the state would still need federal funding to continue with projects.

“We in Sarawak also need to focus on basic amenities like water supply and electricity, and rural roads. These require a huge amount of money,” he said.

Sarawak is independent in the political sense and enjoys good ties with Putrajaya while being politically autonomous, he said at a gathering of Malay associations here.

Earlier, he attended a gathering with Miri Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) component parties - Parti Pesaka Bumiputra Bersatu (PBB), Sarawak United Peoples Party (SUPP), Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) and Progressive Democratic Party (PDP).

He also launched the GPS Miri machinery to prepare for the state elections.

Johari, who is GPS chairman, said the state will use its money to carry out certain projects.

He expressed confidence that SUPP, PRS and PDP would work with PBB in developing the state.

He also urged them to reach out to the younger generation to groom future leaders.
