MIRI: Sarawakians need to be proactive and master English.
Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Openg said this applies not only to students in schools and institutions of higher education but also working adults in the private sector as well as government departments and agencies.
Speaking at the launch of a three-day English language workshop here yesterday organised by the state Education, Science and Technological Research Ministry, Abang Johari said mastery of English was essential.
“Having a good command of English is no longer an option.
“Students of all ages and working adults must improve their command of the language, both written and spoken,
“They have no choice because computer technology and social media apps are in English,” he told the nearly 1,000 participants who had gathered for the event.
Abang Johari called on teachers in both government and private schools in Sarawak to be more committed to using English to boost their students’ command of the language.
He said teachers must use English regularly inside and outside the classroom and and get their students to do the same.
“To halt and reverse the declining standard of English, we must take bolder steps to use the language on a wider scale every day.
“Teachers must converse more in English and they should encourage their students to do so,” said Abang Johari, adding that more written communication should be in the language too.
