MIRI: The government recognises the role churches play in nation-building as well as community development.
Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau said as such churches in cities or rural areas would continue to receive financial aid from the government.
“As long as one practises one’s religion with respect for other religions, we are free to practise our own religions,” he said when officially opening Borneo Evangelical Mission (BEM) Long Jenalong’s new church building.
He stressed that freedom of religion is guaranteed in Malaysia.
Dennis reminded constituents that all churches in Telang Usan have received financial aid from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak through Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
“I know the funds received have been put to good use,” he said.
“I am proud of Long Jenalong’s achievement of being able to complete the building of your new church despite all the shortcomings villagers faced.”
Dennis also handed over a minor rural project grant of RM10,000 to the church.
The new RM80,000 church building was completed by villagers on a gotong-royong basis.
