Chinese Media Group Boost For Sarawak’s VMY 2007 Programme
SIBU, Jan 9 (Bernama) – A group of journalists from 15 newspapers and travel magazines and a Beijing Television Station crew arrived, here Tuesday to continue with their week-long trip to the state.
Their visit is arranged and sponsored by the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) in its continuing efforts to better promote the state and its tourism attractions to China.
Rudy Anoi, the STB executive for the state central region said the group from Shanghai and Beijing would be split into two groups.
He said the Shanghai group after their city tour would leave for Mukah tomorrow where among others, they would visit its tourism icon the “Lamin Dana”(traditional Melanau house).
“The bigger nine-member Beijing group will visit a longhouse in Bawang Assan near here this afternoon to see for themselves the traditional Iban ways of life and culture.”
He said they would then re-group for their visit to Miri where their itinerary included an overnight trip to the Mulu National Park to visit the Mulu caves and the Penan Settlement there.
Rudy Anoi said Sarawak hoped to attract more Chinese tourists this year.
“We are targeting some 30,000 arrivals from China in conjunction with the VMY 2007 this year. Last year we had 19,000.”
“We hope the group who arrived here on Sunday can write or broadcast much that they have and experience to promote the state.”
"We also hope local travel agencies can liaise with their China counterparts on coming up with special promotions and packages, "Rudy said.
Meanwhile the Sibu Municipal Council led by its deputy chairman Daniel Ngieng this afternoon feted the group to lunch at a hotel here.
