MIRI: A Bidayuh residing in Miri has announced his wish to join the fray of suitors for the new seat of Bukit Semuja in Serian.
Captain Bernard Idit, 46, who hails from Kampung Ampungan, Serian, who is a member of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Miri contacted The Borneo Post yesterday to make his wish known.
According to him, the selected candidate for the seat must be able to work with people from other races and religions and must be able to tackle issues relevant to the constituency.
“The candidate must also be willing and able to work with other people’s representatives in Serian Division, to build and further develop Serian, and perhaps elevate Serian to a city status in the near future,” he said.
Bernard said his priority, if given the chance to serve, was to fight for more job opportunities, especially for youths in the division, and to bring more economic growth and investment to the division.
“I also want to fight for basic utilities to reach every part of the division because some parts still have no access to basic needs such as electricity and clean water supplies and proper roads.”
Bernard is a Health Safety Environment (HSE) manager at a Bursa-listed shipping company in Miri and is a board member of Miri Port Authority (MPA).
He is also the chairman of Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA) Miri as well as a member of DBNA Sarawak Supreme Council.
Bernard also claimed that he had been quite active in social and community work while also participating in joint events with local associations and non-government associations.
Bukit Semuja has 13,192 registered voters from six polling districts including five formerly under Kedup, namely Triboh, Selabi, Pasar Serian, Kakai and Serian Ulu as well as Sedihan a polling district formerly under Tebedu.
