MIRI: The Baram Sape Master Board will stage the second ‘Baram Sape Master Kuala Lumpur’ (BSMKL) semifinal on October 23 in Kuala Lumpur, following the success of the inaugural one held last year.

BSMKL organising chairman Temenggong Elizabeth said the preliminary round to select sape players will be held at Pustaka Negeri Sarawak, Miri on September 16 from 8.30am to 5pm.

Among the criteria for selection are: the sape players must be 30 years old and above and able to compete alone.

“We are calling for skillful sape players in the country to take part as the festival aimed to nurture the originality of Orang Ulu Sape music.

“The National Department of Culture and Arts will also be collaborating with us in organising the sape competition, to promote the music as well as Sarawak and Malaysia internationally,” she said yesterday.

Elizabeth urged those interested to register as soon as possible, although registration can be made on the spot on September 16.

“We are expecting 30 players for the preliminary round and the top 10 will compete in the semifinal in Kuala Lumpur on October 23,” she added.

Also held as part of the preliminary round competition will be handiciraft exhibition and cultural performance by Tingang Madang Cultural Troupe.
