MIRI: The state Barisan Nasional Backbenchers Club (BNBBC) yesterday strongly condemned the statement by the federal Minister of Tourism and Culture Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz in labelling Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, the state Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister as “setahun jagung” (greenhorn) as rude, arrogant and uncalled for.
It said the statement also did not reflect someone worthy of calling himself a senior minister and was certainly not in the spirit of the BN family.
Its chairman Paulus Palu Gumbang, in a statement, said the federal minister should not have belittled the state minister with a personal attack but instead explain the rationale behind the Tourism Tax.
“As a so-called senior minister, Datuk Seri Nazri should understand that as a state minister, Datuk (Abdul) Karim was not merely expressing his personal opinion but was representing the opinion of the people in the state,” he said.
He said it was right for Abdul Karim to say that the Federal Constitution was silent on tourism and tourism was only inserted later into the Federal List without prior consultation and endorsement from the State Legislative Assembly.
“In this respect, we believe that the law cannot be applied to the state,” he said.
