Barisan Nasional cybertroopers may be at work!

By Patrick Lee, Free Malaysia Today

PETALING JAYA: Whistleblower websites, activist blogs and some onlinenewspapers are crashing as the clock ticks down to the Sarawak state election.

Barisan Nasional cybertroopers may be at work, said National Union of Journalists (NUJ) president Hata Wahari. And the Centre for Independent Journalism is equally suspicious.

These cyber attacks have been going on since last week, Hata said today. Weve seen sites like TV Selangor and others being affected

I think there is a cyber war going on because people are looking for information on Sarawak.

Sarawak Report, a popular site dedicated to exposing the alleged corruption of Sarawak Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud, and similarly critical sites such as Radio Free Sarawak, Dayak Baru and Anil Nettos blog have all been apparently attacked.

Most were still down as this report was uploaded.

Hata alleged that the attacks were part of a government strategy to force Malaysians to depend on the BN-aligned media for news.

When people cant access theses sites, and they need information, they will have to rely on the mainstream media, he said.

I was informed that all the newspapers in Sarawak are running supplements of the good things done by the government there.

He worried that the voting pattern would be affected.

Timing is suspiciou

CIJ executive officer Masjaliza Hamzah said the timing of the attacks made them suspicious.

They create suspicion in the people who rely on the Internet for alternative news, she said.

She expects more of such sites to crash in the next few days.

I think if you present alternative viewpoints, the likelihood of being attacked is quite high, she said.

Sarawak Report owner Clare Rewcastle Brown yesterday told FMT that the site was hit by a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack, such as happened to international whistleblower WikiLeaks.

Masjaliza urged alternative news sites and blogs to beef up their online security measures.

Is mc.net victimised also?

Maybe admin can check the log files for any attempt to attack this site? I hope no la…

Miricommunity.net; if those were here this morning; you may see a SQL malfunction & it were up awhile then its down again till about 9 ish just now.

IF Admin-Jack Liaw of mc.net manage to come up/publish with their log that their is an attack done; then it will be good that we have evidence of such lock down being done by cybertroopers.
No doubt; there is always information controls on this kind of damaging news/reports especially those who are ruling currently.

Havnt they heard, you can shut the whole media; but once the fire sparks gone wild…it will be damn hard to put it off. Example; Wikileaks on Eygpt, Tunisia & now Libya…
Remember, Malaysia media is not at its freedom foot yet; its still under govt ruling.

Well, let’s just say we are getting a larger surge of junk traffic these days. Just as long as we keep all neutral political discussion under a single topic, MiriCommunity.net will not give the misconception of a biased forum and become a political target from any parties. Please do your part to report if there are new topics emerging which has the same political tone trying to flood the forum.

people, there are enough rumours flying around during the election as it is… let’s just keep to the facts and let the moderators find out what happened instead of making baseless assumptions…

About the surge in junk traffic.
Analyse of the attack;

  1. have sudden surge of call to your server location.
  2. keep the DDoS method on, thus you have large surge in traffic sudden & your SQL go haywire.
  3. Its a hit & run method; will last just awhile. But dont feel ease, bcos there maybe another wave coming in soon. So be wise; mirror out the forum somewhere else.

About MC.net; let them the forumer speak of their views. the more there is; there will be more good insides of mind come in than just be a rant or baseless talk. but those cheap talk; i do hope the moderators merge it up & stay sideline neutral in the talks

Okay, well said
Will leave the jobs to the mods & admins to handle
