Baghdad blast shakes up visiting UN head
Steven Edwards, CanWest News ServicePublished: Thursday, March 22, 2007
UNITED NATIONS In a reminder of why the United Nations all but abandoned Iraq in 2003, an explosion rocked the Baghdad press conference of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon Thursday after he made an unannounced visit to the Iraqi capital.
The blast presumed to have been caused by Katyusha rocket occurred shortly after Ban told reporters he was considering boosting the UN’s presence in the country because of improved security.
The U.S.-led coalition has claimed the security situation is showing signs of getting better as more U.S. soldiers arrive as part of U.S. President George W. Bushs troop “surge.”

any opinions on how to stop these violence?

how can common people live with this sort of violence? There are different people living together all around the world and not come to this. immagine the hakka speaking guys parking a car bomb in a mandrine speaking neighbourhood in Miri? I can’t see this happening no matter what. you guys are still a community even with different races, united even if a tragedy occurs.

think these guys in iraq have a genetic defect causing their violence, even against their own communities?

7 words. Get the US troops out of Iraq.

That’s easier said than done. The US economy cannot sustain another 9/11 and will surely go into a tailspin crashing the other economies around the world including Asia’s & Malaysia. Think the families in Malaysia can handle another Asian financial crisis? The world cannot sustain another 9/11.

they shoulnt go there in the first place. going to war in iraq is a big mistake in human history. it is proven that iraq have nothing to do with 9/11. they choose iraq becoz of oil. they choose afghanistan becoz of oil. they thought they can make iraq another afghanistan. well now they know they’re wrong.

The US sure lost its focus on the hunt for Osama bin Ladin.

But what does UN boosting security in Iraq have to do with wanting to move US troops out?

UN originally disagreed the move into Iraq by the US.

U.N. U.S.

Any war is a big mistake, iraq doesn’t have any weapons of mass destrucion which was another reason the war started, but nothing can be done about that now. The violence there now proves that countries in iraq have to finish their job.

There is interest in iraq because of its oil, this provides the country leaders with immense wealth. irresponsible leaders like saddam can do a lot of bad things with this money and this it is not a risk some world leaders is prepared to take. In fact some leaders believe this so that they started a war with iraq.

there is no way US and allies can stop the violences , not to mention winning the war.

for me, to reduce the violences, the UN and other country must build up the country education system. children in iraq are growing to be a pro-violence citizen. i once saw a report in cnn showing childrens on the street playing with toy guns and playing “US vs Insurgents”. they even use some so call “war verbs” teach by the US army. it is sad to see those children playing on the street with guns and shouting out words that should not even been understood by them at that age.

the start of this war is clearly about the oil. look at the current issue now. They know North Korea is capable to build nuclear weapon. with no oil in the country, the US will not go into war as for them there is no financial benefit. But when the claim Iraq is capable in producing the weapon (which we all know that they are lying) and with the huge oil reserve in that country, they when on war. Maybe another reason is Bush Jr. try to get a revenge for Bush Sr. for losing the earlier war with Saddam…

Is that sentence from your own view or you are talking from Bush Jr’s view? As I recall, the 90s Gulf War was a UN directed initiative to pacify the Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait but was stopped short of an actual ‘invasion’ into Iraq - which was why Saddam wasn’t ousted.

After all that’s said and done, Bush will leave behind a legacy totally mired in DEATH & DESTRUCTION. He will also leave office as the most incompetent president in US history. And above all, he must be a complete disgrace to Americans! His ONLY achievement…make the filthy rich that much richer!!

Yeah, agreed, but the topic’s about Iraq.

Ok, The war is already lost laaa, there is no way anyone will believe the US when they say they’re winning.

Build the country you say? This is precisely what US, Australia and other countries like Japan are trying to do… if only these idiots would stop blowing themselves up. You can only build up a country if your engineers don’t keep getting killed.

Oil is a factor, yes there is wealth in selling this stuff, there is also a responsibility in managing this money properly. If you were Bush, would you be a responsible leader of your country by sitting still if another country keeps telling everyone they’re gonna nuke you tomorrow? Your presidential advisors believes that, your CIA believes that, your millitary believes that. So the invasion prooved that Saddam was only bluffing & he’s a real idiot.

North Korea is totally different from iraq, everything is different and like you said they don’t have oil. But that’s not the deal, the DPRK has big friends like China who is also your friend and close friends of your other friends like Australia. The DPRK has got nukes & unlike the dumb people in iraq, they’ve tested them & know how to use them & can put them in big rockets. Of course, you’ll give them a chance laa.

Being a country, it’s all about showing power. China has an army so huge that on training grounds alone you’ll see their tanks side-by-side up till the horizon and it doesn’t end there either. And China has an elite group of kung-fu soldiers. Which also happen to be women.

I believe North Korea won’t use weaponry for attacks on other countrues. Their launch was nothing but a ploy to disrupt the Japanese economy at the time and show the US that they’re not the only ones who have real weapons.

On the building of Iraq thing - agreed with Peter Choy. There are already engineers etc in Iraq trying very hard to build the infrastructure only to have them blown up.

well, Bush Sr. wanted to oust Saddam that time. He do not have any good reason to do so and not to mention support. With 9/11, this seem to be a universal reason to start a war with any country.

The main reason why north korean is so public about the availability of weapon in their country is to stop the US to invade them. Japan do not have the power to start any military war with any country after WWII with the military power limitation agreement signed. We can see than Iran is doing the same thing. Publicly saying they have nuclear power in their country. A way to stop US to start any immediate invasion. they might no have, or might have the weapon but they know that with the losing war in Iraq and the ever increasing deficit in the US budget, US could not afford another war.

Bush Republican Party need to win the coming election. he know that any failure to win back the presidency will spell disaster. With China continue to enjoy double digit grows, US economy will weaken. With pressure from the south American countries, US is in danger.

Eh brother, what are you talking about ah? How can China economy grow with the US economy getting weaker? the biggest buyer of chinese manufactured goods is the US lar. Thats where china’s getting the money to have double digit growth (& last 2 years wasn’t double digits anyway?). That’s why you hear in the news every night interest rates in US affects world markets in asia, including China’s.

In order for china to maintain its growth, it needs wealthy friends - people that will buy from china and pay on time. Australian like China because it’s buying our minerals and paying on time. Does Australian want the chinese economy to be in trouble? No. Same way we don’t want the US economy to be in trouble because the chinese get their money to pay us from the US. Is malaysia affected by the US economy? Yes, same way we don’t want the US economy to go down and drive down the KLSE so you can’t get a pay raise this year. Do you want the US to spend big on consumer goods and drive up the world economy? Well, if these clowns in iraq stop killing each other we might have a chance.

In the world economy everybody either wins or lose together.
