Astro to meet MCMC to discuss complaints on its services



Pay-television provider, Astro All Asia Network plc, will meet Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) on Thursday to discuss complaints pertaining to its services, says MCMC chairman Datuk Dr Halim Shafie.

Among the complaints the MCMC has noted are the RM10 late payment fee, disconnection upon a months delayed payment, reconnection and technical support fees, disrupted services during bad weather, billing disputes, lack of package choices and programme content.

We will have a meeting on Thursday, he told reporters after the meeting between Minister of Energy, Water and Communications, Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor, and the ministry staff here today.

Recently, the ministry barred Astro from adding more channels until it improved its services following numerous complaints.

Astro has also been given a December deadline to comply with the Multimedia Communications Act 1998.

Astros licence was issued in 1997 under two Acts the Telecoms Act and Broadcasting Act which were abolished and replaced by the Multimdedia Communications Act.

Recently, Shaziman has been reported as saying the government hoped Astro would migrate to the Act by year-end.

He also assured Astro that it would not lose its exclusive right to be the sole operator of direct-to-home broadcasting via satellite until 2017 once its migrated to the Act.

He said in 1999, Astro has indicated it was willing to migrate to the 1998 legislation, but it had yet to do so.

Once Astro migrates to the Act, enforcement by the MCMC will be more effective
