MIRI: The Sarawak government has frozen new licences for large commercial plantations in Sarawak.

Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem said no new permits will be issued for such plantations as there have been too many controversies over the opening up of land.

“Enough of these commercial plantations. No more new licences will be issued,” he said at a gathering with Parti Pesaka Bumiputra Bersatu (PBB) members here.

Adenan is the president of PBB which is the backbone party of the Sarawak Barisan Nasional.

He said his administration will take measures to safeguard the interest of the local landowners including their native customary land.
