LONG LAMA: Telang Usan will be the catalyst of rural transformation in Baram through biodiversity, greenery, culture, and local lifestyle.
Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Abang Haji Openg said Telang Usan in general is rich in biodiversity which is incomparable with other regions in the country.
“I agree with the tour package for Baram as proposed by Telang Usan Assemblyman Dennis Ngau earlier,” said Abang Johari, who is also Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture at the launching of the inaugural anniversary celebration of Telang Usan as a district last weekend.
Dennis in his welcoming address had proposed a tour package which would give visitors to the world famous Mulu National Park travelling overland from Miri, Logan Bunut, Long Lama, passing through Kayan longhouses in Apoh Region, Long Bedian sub-district, Tenyok Rimba Community Resort, various Penan settlements, Long Iman and by longboat to Mulu National Park.
“As a person who has vast experience in the tourism and hospitality industry, I believe Dennis is spot-on when he said the new tour route will add value to the current tour packages to Mulu National Park. What is most important, the new route will give a chance to locals to participate in the local tourism industry especially our rural folks,” Abang Johari added.
According to Dennis the proposed new tour route for Baram would allow visitors to visit Lambir National Park, Logan Bunut National Park, end their tour with a visit to Mulu National park. Along the way they can also enjoy the culture and tradition of the Orang Ulu community including the Penans.
Abang Johari further said: “We have cancelled the Baram Dam project which is supposed to create opportunities for the people of Baram and therefore I am thankful to your representative (YB Dennis) for doing his best to find alternative ways for the people of Baram to improve their income.”
Abang Johari went on to say that Sarawak is lucky as it has a stable political environment.
“The mandate given to Barisan Nasional to rule the state for another five years will be fully used to bring development to the people including those in rural areas like Telang Usan,” he said.
He added that the alleviation of Telang Usan, Subis and Beluru in Miri Division into districts was part of the strategies of the government to get closer to the people especially the underprivileged rural folks.
Baram MP Anyie Ngau, Miri Resident Antonio Kahti Galis, Political Secretary to the Chief Minister, Charles Balan Seling, Temenggong Elizabeth Deng, DO Baru Taie, Penghulu Desmond Yap and local communities leaders were also present.
At the event Abang Johari also announced a government grant of RM20,000 for organising the event.
