MIRI: Newest supermarket in Miri, A Hong’s Grocer is the first to offer genuine Taiwanese ponkan for this upcoming Chinese New Year celebration

This was revealed at a media conference yesterday which was attended by representatives of the Tung Shih Farmers Association of Taiwan, the supermarket directors Yvonne Wong and Elaine Wong, and operations manager Aelene Siang.

According to Yvonne Wong, the public may be familiar with the lukam which may be similar to the ponkan but they are not. She explained that lukam is from China while ponkan is cultivated only in Taiwan.

The supermarket imports this type of fruits directly from the Taichung province in Taiwan from Tung Shih Farmers Association which has a strong support from Taichung City government.

Wong said a Taiwanese ponkan is rounder in shape and less sugary when compared with lukam which is flatter and has a distinctive sourly taste.

Cultivated, packed and exported by the Tung Shih Farmers Association, ponkan oranges have been exported to Singapore for the past 15 years and they are getting popular in Malaysia especially in West Malaysia and Sabah, said Wong.

Wong said to maintain its quality, ponkan farmers do not use pesticides as the fruits are organically cultivated, while harvesting is done by handpicking and only the best fruits are selected for export.

The Taiwanese ponkan fruits available at A Hong’s Grocer are sold in boxes and also in loose form.
