62 illegal immigrants arrested in Kuching

KUCHING: The Sarawak Immigration Department has arrested 47 illegal immigrants for various immigration-related offences in five separate raids in and around Kuching and Kota Samarahan, here yesterday.

The department, said in a statement yesterday, they comprised 44 Indonesian men, one Indonesian woman and two Chinese men, aged between 20 and 60.

According to the statement, in the raids conducted on kongsi houses at construction sites here, more than 100 immigrants were inspected and among their offences were failure to produce valid travel documents and for overstaying or abusing their social visit passes.

All of them were taken to the Semuja Immigration Detention Depot, Serian, about 75km from here for further investigations, the statement said.

Meanwhile in SIBU, the district Immigration Enforcement Division in a separate statement said the department had arrested eight Indian nationals after raiding an eatery at Jalan Lanang, here yesterday.

One Indonesian man was also detained by the department at the Sibu Bus Terminal on Tuesday for committing immigration-related offences, the statement said.
